Hotel Information: Turo de Vilana is located on a small site in a residential district of Barcelona. In this case, the dimensions of the site are an essential determinant in the configuration of the building, making it necessary to locate the common areas of the hotel on two floors. Due to the slope of the street, in order to liberate the maximum amount of space for bedrooms these floors are treated as basements, with the limitations of illumination that this involves. For this reason the access to the hotel is located at the lowest part of the site. It consists of a walkway over the space of the lower floor, thus creating a single volume that interrelates the common areas of the two floors. Several services of the hotel are located on the access floor. They are defined spatially by the use of varied materials that mark the change of use chromatically in order to avoid the creation of small closed in spaces. To facilitate the integration of the access floor and the lower floor and to achieve a permeability between the two, the handrail that defines the double space was made in glass.

Room Information: The rooms – 22 in total – are located on the upper floors. All of them have clear human dimensions and seek maximum comfort for the client. They are characterised by the use of warm materials such a wood and marble in the bathrooms.

The hotel project site is an approximate area of 150,000m2 located of the Red Sea. The Red Sea is to the east, a lagoon to the west, and channels connecting the lagoon to the Sea are located to the north and south edges of the site. The design for the hotel ground takes further advantage of the sea water as a landscaping feature. A series of connected canals and lagoons allow each guestroom to have a waterfront position. The character of the buildings in massing, materials, facades and interior furnishing and decoration is an interpretation of Egyptian traditions. Vernacular styles are used to give the impression of an Egyptian village made up of individual units differentiated by colour, height, domes, arches and columns. The design received an award from the American Institute of Architects, New Jersey Chapter in 1996. The architecture of the complex is a reinterpretation of traditional Egyptian architecture based on the construction of small, seemingly independent units thanks to a skilled handling of the volumes and a wide range of colours.

Hotel Information: The Grand Hyatt Berlin is anchored in Potsdamer Platz´s new development, built to restore the square and convert it into the new financial district of the city. During the nineteenth century Potsdamer Platz was one of the most popular walking spots in Berlin and during the 1920s one of the busiest squares in Europe . After its near complete destruction during World War II and the erection of the Berlin Wall, it become a no man´s land. The powerful presence of the hotel, marked by the solid mass of its volume is a reflection of the city´s history of cosmopolitan architecture. From the exterior the large arcades and the detailed work in sandstone and the red brick stand out. In the interior a restrained and elegant style prevails through the use of a contemporary approach and outline-edge elements.  Purely decorative effects have been avoided in order to put more emphasis on objects that accentuate the building´s architectural context. In the entrance are two large eye catching inverted glass pyramind that hang from the celling producing light and shadow effects over the course of the day. Stabs of illuminated alabaster and a work of art by artist Cerdid Millar dominate the main wall. A dark marble staircase leads to the banquet hall.

Through the glass facade, splendid views of the city can be enjoyed, while towards the interior a striking view of the courtyard can be contemplated.

Hotel Information: Obviously the most influential factor in the design in Sillken Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao is the powerful presence of its neighbor the Guggenheim Museum. Bilbao, which served as a point of departure when cam to develop this project. So that the museums´s proximity would be more than just anecdotal, the hotels design capture some of the spirit of the museum and aims to offer long with the comforts of a luxury hotel, some of best places of twentieth century design. In order to house all the very relevant pieces under the same roof, designer Javier Marisa took charge of designing a project that could accommodate all these objects. They integrate with the hotel but do not lose their individuality. The general layout of the hotel is based on clearly distinguishable public and private areas. This concept with the goal of creating a dynamic ambiance in the public areas, allows the hotel to participate in the urban activity light outside its doors. With this in mind, the hotel attempts to become another landmark in the city and alternatively, to generate ongoing activity inside its doors. Perhaps the most emblematic element here is the Cipres Fosil a large sculpture of stone and metal mesh that rises up the entire height of the central atrium. According to Javier Mariscal, the designer, the sculpture reflects the character of Bilbao, a city of excesses and contrasts.

The character of the architecture and style of the area, one of the most exclusive on the Mediterranean, serve as a reference point for the interior decoration of the hotel, a mix of classic and contemporary designs, elegant yet informal. The most important objective, according to the designer, was to to create an atmosphere of well being and tranquility that would contrast appealingly with the hustle and bustle of the other establishments in the area. The  entrance area  and lobby on the first floor are decorated with original 1930 black and white photographs of the Fevier. The light tones of the walls and sofas contrast with the dark tones of the natural wood floor and tables.

The renovation began with the restoration of an old unused building in the ideal spot for any visitor, just minute from the historic centre and right next to the Milan Fairgrounds. The facade was redone in stone giving exterior a restrained, convincing image that recalls Adolf Loos´s projects from the early twentieth century. The spaces final character is achieved through the interior design that is able to leave a delicate refined touch. An unusual commitment to questions of detail stands out like the standard followed for the marble installations on the first floor or the lighting design in all the rooms.

It is thus an example of the multi-purpose buildings so often encountered in modern cities.  This Hotel serves as an add-on superstructure to cover the access road to the underground car-park and now houses separately accessible conference and other multi-function rooms and in summer, this protected urban square between the hotel and the new building offers an attractive spot for an outside cafe.  The main entrance to the building itself is situated in the west facade. A giant cleaning bucket in dazzling pink designed by Flatz is used in the stylishly designed hotel lobby in a conscious effort to break up the concept of a single aesthetic entity. Another work by Flatz in the hotel lobby is a sculpture consisting of black leather bags freely suspended from the ceiling through which the clients are forced to walk and enter into direct interaction. The hotel also contains works by Moholy-Nagy, Imi Knoebel and Ingmar Alge. The building has a generally balanced tranquil appearance. The architects chose to make a necessarily strong, formal gesture for the hotel entrance zone.
